“Words are in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it”.
- Albus Dumbledore, The Harry Potter Series.
Words are arguably one of the most powerful and influential tools we use to speak our minds and to communicate effectively. Acting as the pillars of strength for our communication, they give us the ability to convey our ideas and thoughts without leaving any space for misinterpretation. As a result, command over words would mean the mastery of communication.
However, being able to communicate easily without any hinderance does not come easy. For that, one has to have ample knowledge and grip over Language - another major keystone in the history of our evolution, and its two main subsets - Syntax and Vocabulary. With these in hand, one would have all the qualities required to be an excellent communicator.
So how do we get command over words? How can we master the art of effective communication?
The answer to these questions can be answered through Linguistics - The scientific study of language and its structure, and more deeply by the subject of Psycholinguistics - “the study of the psychological and neurobiological factors that enable humans to acquire, use, comprehend and produce language”. In short, to master the art of communication, one must excel in acquiring and utilizing vocabulary effectively. Knowledge of new words and their utilization inevitably means having a better grip at self-expression and a more holistic approach at voicing one’s self.
Finally, as said by a famous American entrepreneur, Jim Rohn, “Vocabulary enables us to interpret and to express. If you have a limited vocabulary, you will also have a limited vision and a limited future”.
